Thank goodness Ben Franklin got outvoted...

Isn't that cool?! And a damn sight more impressive than a turkey, imho.

That's just ludicrously patriotic *g*

Lovely bird. I'm surprised Dubya hasn't ordered them shot and skinned for oil yet...

We have Blue-Tongue (aka Bobtail) Skinks in our yard at the moment. They sneak in at odd moments and yoink some of my kitteh's food. She lets them get away with it because they bluff her with the "I have a blue, gaping maw! I'm dangerous!" shctick. Well, that and they're bigger than she is...

Isn't it so. *g*

They have been taken off the endangered species list. It's probably just a matter of time...

Have they been taken off the Endangered Species list because they're no longer Endangered, or because the EPA just doesn't give a crap anymore?

Did a little googling... There are 10,000 nesting pairs in the continental US, which is better than the 413 pairs back in 1963, but still not that great considering they're spread over 3,119,686 square miles.

Taking anything off the Endangered Species List is always fraught with danger. They did that with the Humpback Whale just a few years ago, and now the Japanese Government are trying to hunt them (in Australian Antarctic waters, which is kind of an act of War, but nobody seems to care as it's only animals) I hope the Bald Eagle remains in the skies over your country for many aeons after we humans destroy ourselves...

Oh damn, that's just beautiful!
I saw white eagles once. It was during the ornithological trip and it looked something like that:
prof: Oh look there, at the horizon! You see those two black dots?
us: *use the binoculars* Yeah, there's something there.
prof: It's a pair of white eagles!!
us: ... ... ...okeeeeeeeeeeeeey...

Hee! Actually, that's how it was with this eagle too. The pictures were taken with a telephoto lens. From the ground it just looked like a brown blob. *g*

That is cool.

Also, watching baldies dive for fish from about 30 feet away while sitting in a McDonalds parking lot was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, I swear.

Oh, wow. That must have been awesome.

I didn't get to see this guy dive for anything, but he did fly around a bit--absolutely gorgeous. *g*

Just amazing . . . and also that it was there long enough to get pictures!
