WTF

This is one of the stupidest things I've read in a long, long time. I mean, honestly, the fact that this man is breathing air that could be used by intelligent beings disturbs me.

Comic Contempt

So many things are just wrong with this article. You can tell the writer's never actually read any comics.

Hollywood hasn’t exactly helped either. By consistently funding turgid comic-book adaptations in the vain hope of capturing that elusive adolescent geek market (via repeated shots of Jennifer Garner’s taut buttocks — see Elektra), the movie business is actually fuelling the comic-book industry’s continuing obsession with hooker chic.

So, Elektra isn't really a resurrected assassin, she's just a prostitute. Glad that was cleared up for me.

Talking about Sin City - Here at last, unmediated by mainstream sensibilities, is the raw reality of comic-book art and the truth about the hopeless phallocentric frenzy that stirs inside every comic-book geek.

Evidently all comic book artists have to go to the Frank Miller School of Art. And, I'm phallocentric. Which confuses the hell out of me. Should I be dominating myself?

Whatever.

I know there's a lot of debate over the treatment of women in comics, and yeah, they can be incredibly misogynistic, especially the older ones. For the record, I loved Sin City, and I wasn't offended by it at all. I'm offended by stuff like Tag Body Spray commercials (Buy our product and have beautiful women literally throw themselves at you. If you're lucky, you may even get to see a catfight. Meee-ow.).

What really pisses me off about this article is that it goes from the treatment of women in comics/comic book movies, to why women don't buy comics and/or go into comic stores. Which, of course, is utter bullshit. Okay, I admit, on some occasions, when gaming tournaments are being held, I do sometimes get a whiff of unwashed teenage male. But, dude, they're gamers... ;)

What really really pisses me off. Shit like this -

Unlike male counterparts, female comic heroines are skilled in the mundane arts, such as gymnastics (DC’s Huntress), “online skills” (seriously! See DC’s desk-bound Oracle)...

Yes, Huntress is just a glorified gymnast, y'all. And, Oracle got into the JLA with her mad Google skillz.

Bottom line - Yes, comics have been known to be pretty shitty to female characters. No, women do not run screaming from cardboard cutouts of Red Sonja. No, comic book stores do not smell. No, geeks do not fear water, they even have been known to use soap. Yes, this writer is a moron.

Thank you.

::boggles:: Oracle's skills are mundane? Uh...

And why is Huntress mundane but Nightwing isn't? They're both just gymnasts, right?

::pauses to wipe sarcasm off keyboard::

Yeah, this article sucked rocks.

Well, obviously because Nightwing's a male, and men can't be exploited.

Not only am I offended by the fact that this individual is perpetrating every negative "geek" stereotype to be found, but by the fact that the author does not offer any means to rebut his claims. He is hiding behind the anonymity that the internet can supply. He obviously is content in his ignorant state, or he would allow others, who might have a different opinion (and actual experience to back their opinion up) to discuss the issue with him. People like this, who indulge in willful ignorance, are among the lowest forms of human life--right above murderers and rapists in my opinion--as the damage that they do can be just as long lasting, and for no better reason.

Yeah, um thanks for posting the link, and sorry to spam your journal with my rage, just...*ARRGH* It's probably a good thing they didn't make his email public. I would have said something regrettable, I'm sure.

No problem. *g* Rants are good for the soul. Mainly because they help let off steam that would otherwise build up and fester until we snapped and
went around attacking random idiots (like know-nothing journalists with an allergy to research) that, until the laws get changed, are 'people too', or something, and then all our time would be taken up by anger management therapy.

See, rants are good for you. *g*

Wow, is that offensive. I may be more offended by that article than by the scantily clad woman in high heels in the doorway of the comic book shop. Which doen't say much, since I'm bi and the local comic book shop does not, in fact, have a cut out of Red Sonja in the doorway. Drat. However, your rant was greatly entertaining to read, and I agree with all of it. You rock.

Yeah, mine neither. I think if my comic book guy put one out either his wife or daughter would beat him with it.

However, your rant was greatly entertaining to read, and I agree with all of it. You rock.

Thanks *g* And, yeah, that article was way more offensive than any picture or drawing, even the art in Birds of Prey, and that series has gotten pretty boobtastic lately. During Black Canary's last fight, I kept thinking of Mighty Endowed from Young Justice "Too top heavy..."
