Has anyone else ever realized mid way through writing something that the story has suddenly gone off in a completely different (better!) direction than what you had originally planned, and you find yourself with a few thousand words that no longer fit anywhere?

There's nothing to do but delete, but geez, getting rid of that much work is just painful. :/

Save the excess and use it in the sequel :)

Post it as a snippet, a teaser. The best trailers use material that won't actually be in the movie!

Except when I say I've gone off in another direction, I mean I've gone off in ANOTHER direction. ;D I completely changed two characters' backstory, jobs, and characterization. But, I am happy to report that things are running much more smoothly now, whereas it used to be that writing this was like pulling teeth.
