MX Malarkey - My Take
Dec. 11th, 2002 10:52 pmGeez,
j_crew_guy,
workingslacker, I leave you guys alone for like five minutes...
Seriously though, what the hell?!?
I think I'm more upset at the way Random's been treated then the fact that someone was too rude, or prehaps too naive to ask our permission before writing a sequel to one of our stories. I almost want to rejoin the list just so I can make my feelings loud and clear.
Taking some deep breaths here...
Okay, going to be all calm, and explain my feelings on the matter.
Every social community, whether it be in RL or cyberland has it's own guidelines for conduct. Most of these rules are unwritten but can be found out easily enough by observing the other members of the community, occasionally asking questions, and using a little something called common sense. We were all wet behind the ears at some point. Can these newbies be annoying? Hell yes, but so are a lot of other things. You deal, and eventually they find their way around.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, yes, a mistake was made. A person shouldn't write a sequel to a fic without getting permission from the original fic's author(s). It's a common courtesy. Maybe the person who wrote the sequel hasn't been involved in fanfiction for very long. Maybe this is even the first fic s/he's written. Who knows. In cases like that certain allowances can be made. We all make mistakes now and then.
However, what I am having more trouble with is how Random was treated on the list. She calls someone on a breach of etiquette that happens to involve two of her friends, and suddenly she's getting roasted over the coals!
Now, J_Crew_Guy, Random, and I have known each other for years. We are truly good friends. I mean, exchanging cross-country Christmas presents kind of good friends. This isn't some fandom related only kind of thing. I trust Random. If she felt the need to speak up on our behalf, then I think the situation warranted such an action. I'm just sorry she's had to put up with so much.
So, post the story or don't post the story. I don't really give a damn. And, if anyone has a problem with that they can send the flames my way and leave my friends out of it.

If you'd like me to forward a message to the list, I will. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be on it, though.
*hugs* It's great to have friends like you guys.
