This is just a lovely day.

Woke up at 4ish this morning to go to the bathroom. Saw this fluttering at the ceiling. Thought, "Wow, that's a big moth." Noticed the leathery wings. Thought, "Wait, that's not a moth. Ah, shit."

Yes, there was a bat in my room.

Called the Health Department because the doctors doesn't open until 1pm on Wenesdays. Was told by the nurse, "Yeah, you're probably going to need to get rabies shots."

Still waiting to hear official word from a doctor before I trot off into the city. The first shot has to be given in an emergency room, and is going to cost about $130. Luckily the other SEVEN can be done at a Patient First and will only cost about $30 each. Yeah, I reeeally needed this right now.

And the real kicker? We haven't been able to find the damn bat!

Hey,

Did the bat bite you? Because if not, then you're probably alright- but check with the Medical folks to make sure. And Rabies shots are awful, but they're necessary.

Hope thinks work out okay.

btw- if at all possible, could you catch and release the bat, rather than kill it?

According to the CDC if you wake up in a room with a bat you should just assume you've been bitten, since bat teeth are so tiny any marks may not show up, and you know, the whole rabies thing is incurable and fatal. Kind of falls into the better safe than your brain turning into mush category. ;D

btw- if at all possible, could you catch and release the bat, rather than kill it?

Since I couldn't find it at first and I had to go ahead and get the shots, there would really be no reason to kill it. But, like I said, there's no sign of it. I think it probably got out the same way it got in (I'm pretty sure it wriggled it's way in beside the air conditioner), or it escaped into the rest of the house, in which case it may never be found. Seriously. Counting the attic, the house is a 3,000 sq.ft. three story Victorian containing mostly dark wood. Nooks and crannies galore. If Lucy-fur hasn't found it within a day or two I'm just going to assume that it's gone off to live in the void with the original remote to one of the televsions, my yearbook from 1994, and a whole gaggle of mismatched socks.

Okay, so you went ahead and got the shots. Keen. Is it still 20 or so shots into your stomach, or have things improved since I read CUJO? Still, your brilliant brain is safe now, so I think you should celebrate by writing more Viggorli, in which Billy Boyd doesn't die and gets to have hot sex with Karl Urban *g*...

btw- I am in envy of your house. Three stories, dark wood. Guh. And I've always wanted a place with a creepy-arsed attic and a cellar. Basically, my dream home is a cross between Buffalo Bill's house and the dream version of 1423 Elm Street *g*

Your bats may be bigger, but ours will KEEL YOU. Eventually. See, that's the scary thing about rabies. You've got a seven day window to start the treatment, and after that you're a goner. Symptoms might not show up for weeks, months, even years, but you're pretty much dead man walking.

Nine shots spread out over almost a month. Five go in my arm, the rest... let's just say I had a wee bit of dificulty sitting yesterday. :P

It's weird that America's bats are more dangerous than Australian bats. Clearly they didn't get the memo about all the nasties being located here... *g*

Rabies is a very cunning virus. In suspension is saliva as it is, rather than blood, it aggravates you so you bite others and thus transmit the thing. I respect that sneaky inventiveness *g*
