Sep. 7th, 2005 06:25 pmHad the last shot today. I am now officaly rabies free. *g*
I think I now understand why almost everyone I've told about the bat incident asks "Well, if you didn't get bit, why are you getting the shots?" Right before she jammed the needle in my arm (ow, by the way), the nurse if I was getting the shots because I had developed symptoms.
O.o
A healthcare professional doesn't know jack about rabies, why should the average person.
So, I told her that no, I hadn't developed any symptoms, and that once you developed symptoms you were basically dead. She was, needless to say, a bit shocked, so I elaborated. I told her the reason you have to get the shots right away is because you have a ten day window from the time of infection (or possible infection) to get treatment, after that, you're dead. It could take a couple days, or up to a decade, but the rabies virus will have taken hold in your brain, and there is no cure.
That's why it's such a damn scary disease.
Anyway, all over now. And, if I ever have another run in with a suspect animal, I'll just have to get a booster.
